This week Lawrence Rand celebrated their 10th birthday! In this week’s blog we’re going to take a trip back in time and look at what life was like in 2008, it only seems like yesterday!
Managing Director Peter Lawrence had this to say regarding the 10 year anniversary “So tomorrow 1st May Lawrence Rand is 10 years old, only 4% of a new business start-ups make it this far within the UK and setting it up in the worst recession on record in 2008 and winning over 10 national awards, I am so proud of the team, a massive thank you to all the suppliers and customers and most important my amazing wife, kids and family for their support”. These words show how far Lawrence Rand have come in 10 years.
It’s now time to look back over the past 10 years to see what was happening in 2008. If you were to turn on the TV at the start of May 2008, you would catch the first ever episode of ‘The Inbetweeners’. This show went on to become a cult classic among British teens and will continue to bring negative connotations to briefcases for the rest of the time.
If you were to turn on the radio you would hear the birth of Katy Perry or maybe Beyoncé’s iconic single ladies! What a year for pop fans… If that wasn’t for you, Coldplay had just dropped their Viva La Vida album so that’s another bit of pop history.
In the world of sport, it was an all English affair in the champions league final. A John Terry penalty would have brought the trophy back to London however his slip allowed Manchester United back into the tie and the rest is history… In the European Championship, Spain defeated Germany 1-0 in the final to set off their world domination.
How can we forget the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A games that saw the rise of Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps roar in triumph! Away from football and the Olympics, Rafael Nadal held off an incredible fightback from Roger Federer to win this first Wimbledon title. Nadal was only 22 at the time which is an incredible thought!
Some major world news included Barack Obama becoming president of the United States of America. Many American’s were shocked by this news however it would turn out that Barack’s appointment would not be the most shocking presidential appointment of the 21st century.
A true reflection of the time is the fact that Apple were only on the iPhone 3GS. We think the iPhone X is probably a bit more sophisticated than its 2008 counterpart.
So, there we have a brief look back at the year of 2008. We look forward to writing this article again in 2028, we wonder what will feature from 2018!
