These days it's hard to get away from the hype of online streaming services. Whether it's Netflix, Amazon Prime or on demand TV, you're spoilt for choice with new quality content. With it being clear that there is an abundance of content out there, we thought we'd highlight 5 Netflix shows that you shouldn't miss out on in 2019. 

Black Mirror

The British science fiction anthology series created by Charlie Brooker is arguably one of the most talked about shows ever to appear on Netflix. It returned to Netflix for a fourth series at the end of 2017 and it has a lot of people hooked. An anthology series is when a set of stories are presented with different characters in each episode. Each episode is different, but it follows a trend of examining modern day society with a particular look at the complications of new technologies. Black Mirror is not for the fainthearted but if you can handle the dark concepts, it is a must watch. At the end of 2018 we were introduced to Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. This is a feature length Black Mirror interactive film which allows viewers to decide the fate of the storyline… This is just one example of how ground-breaking Black Mirror can be.

You learn how bookstore manager Joe gets up to a bit more than reading in his spare time… The story is told in a way that you often feel onside with Joe put that quickly disappears once you find out what he gets up to. The story is gripping and really makes you think… what a good series should do.

Conversation with a killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Who doesn’t love a crime related documentary series? The Ted Bundy Tapes is a genuinely terrifying series about a serial killer that wreaked havoc in America in the mid 1970s. The series is based around interviews conducted with the killer whilst he was on death row. It’s recommended that you don’t watch alone. This series would also help to set you up for the upcoming film “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” where Ted Bundy is portrayed by Zac Efron. The film has come under fire for the glamorisation of the killer.

Sex Education

Sex Education is a Netflix Original series based around the sexual activity of British teens in their late adolescence. You follow the story of Otis (the son of a sex therapist) who attempts to enjoy his Sixth Form experience, but this is plunged into a spin when the occupation of his Mother is shared with the school. Instead of hiding from his ‘heritage’, Otis attempts to use it to his advantage with the help of a new friend. This series screams nostalgia and if you’re comfortable with sexual related content then you’ll have a good laugh whilst also letting it pull on a few heart strings.

The Crown

Like Black Mirror, the latest series of ‘The Crown’ was released at the end of 2017. The Crown follows the romance and political rivalries of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that helped to shape the second half of the 20th century. Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II) and Matt Smith (Prince Philip) portray the roles fantastically and offer a gripping drama that leaves you wanting to keep watching. In the upcoming series’ focusing on the royals at a later stage of life, the roles of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will be reprised by Oliva Coleman and Tobias Menzies respectively.
