New laws introduced to Parliament on 21st July will mean that unused properties can be demolished and rebuilt as homes while home owners will be able to build two storey extensions without the need for full planning permission. The plans aim to support the need for new housing while also providing a boost to town centres. Boris Johnson has vowed to 'use this moment' to build new homes and infrastructure, promising a £5bn new deal. This includes a £12bn affordable homes programme to build 180,000 new affordable home for ownership and rent over the next 8 years. As yet Covid-19 has had little impact on the number of the planning pipeline according to Barbour ABI and planning decisions are still being determined. Under the Coronavirus Act 2020 the government has made a temporary amendment to the law to allow planning meetings to be held via video link until 31st May 2021. There have been rumours that Help to Buy could be extended in an attempt to kickstart the housebuilding industry following lockdown.
